JU-MA-NA, BANYAN TREE RESORT, ULUWATU

High on Bali’s southernmost cliff, Banyan Tree’s fine dining restaurant Ju-Ma-Na took the crown for the Best Restaurant In Indonesia award in 2014 and it definitely deserves its status. Diners can take in breathtaking views over the surrounding ocean from its al fresco terrace and the food – the bulk of which is fresh seafood with an Asian twist – could easily rival that of any lauded big city restaurant.

DINNER UNDER THE STARS, FOUR SEASONS RESORT, SAYAN

Built into the side of a lush jungle basin and situated at the end of 55 metre-long foot bridge, the lily pond on the upper level of the Four Seasons Resort in Sayan offers a backdrop that is pretty tough to beat. Brimming with lily pads and lotus flowers, the infinity-edge pond offers 360-degree views of lush jungle, surrounding rice terraces and the roaring Ayung River below. And in this setting, the exclusive Dinner Under the Stars experience sees a rose petal-laden table laid for two. The five-course menu is available in complete privacy for just one couple and bookings are obviously essential.

HANGING GARDENS OF BALI, UBUD

Picture this: led down a candlelit path through lush, green jungle, you cross a lush river and suddenly enter an ancient temple illuminated by hundreds of candles. A Balinese priest arrives and blesses you and your partner, before you take your seat at a specially arranged dining table. Surrounded by acres of forest and fireflies, your private degustation dinner is served.

For a truly unique dining experience, dinner at the on-site Dalem Segara Temple at the Hanging Gardens of Bali resort is a must.

SARDINE, KUTA

Housed in a sprawling, polished bamboo pavilion overlooking glistening rice paddies, bordered with banana trees, Sardine offers great food, paired with a great view.

The airy space features a large koi-filled pond and the menu is a constantly changing affair. At Sardine, the paddock to plate ethos is very much a focal point and local seafood alongside salads and vegetables from the in-house organic garden make up the bulk of what’s on offer.

Located just off the main Ubud high street, Bebek Tepi Sawah is set in the middle of a ‘sawah’ rice paddy field. The mammoth space is comprised of outdoor pavilions scattered around the paddy, in which diners can choose to be seated on chairs or on the wooden floors.

Famous for its duck dishes, the crispy duck Bebek Betutu (Balinese smoked duck) is a safe bet.

CHIRINGUITO EL KABRON, ULUWATU

Situated in one of the most secluded spots on the island, this is the place to come for a sumptuous dinner without the crowds. Perched 50 meters above sea level on the cliffs of Uluwatu, with an infinity pool overlooking some of Bali’s most favourite surf breaks, El Kabron has one of the best clifftop sunset locations, providing an 180-degree view of the Indian Ocean.

BAWANG MERAH BEACHFRONT RESTAURANT, JIMBARAN BAY

Though far from the slickest restaurant in Jimbaran; with tables positioned right on the beach – equating to a dining experience involving sand beneath your toes, while the roar of surf fills your ears and the sunset against the horizon turns orange, yellow, pink and purple – you won’t mind the lack of white, linen tablecloths!

Freshly caught seafood is Bawang Merah Beachfront Restaurant‘s speciality and after dinner, the restaurant provides evening entertainment in the form of traditional dancing and a friendly local band.

SARI ORGANIK, UBUD

At the centre of the organic produce movement sweeping the spiritual, tree-changer epicentre of Ubud; Sari Organik is both a must-visit for its fresh, healthy, organic meals, but also for its stunning setting.

Perched above a sea of rice paddies, the open air, rustic, bamboo pavilion eatery, serves vegetarian and vegan cooked dishes, alongside raw soups and salads in a quintessential Balinese setting. Produce is harvested daily and diners are welcome to explore the adjacent farm (a 15-minute walk through the rice fields) where you can even handpick your own salad greens.
